Is Panhandling a Crime?

With the weather warming up, BPD receives increased amounts of calls for service involving subjects panhandling.

In the vast majority of calls involving panhandlers, no crime has occurred, such as a subject asking for money with no threat of force stated.

There are two types of panhandling often encountered by our officers. Those who do not actively seek money and those who approach citizens and ask for money.

Police officers who respond to these complaints will evaluate each situation and take appropriate enforcement when applicable.

Lastly, BPD wants to ensure our residents remain safe and aware of their surroundings. When approached by anyone make sure to stay more than arm’s length away and don’t allow the person to crowd you.

If you encounter or know someone in need locally, PATH can offer assistance, please dial 2-1-1.
