The Water Division works with the Engineering Division and provides safe, plentiful, and affordable drinking water for Bloomington and approximately 50 percent of the population of the County outside of Bloomington. The Division also provides regional laboratory services to water providers and contractors through its Illinois Department of Public Health certified laboratory.

Water Supply and Treatment
Water is supplied to residents from two man-made lakes. Lake Bloomington was constructed in 1929 and has a Water Treatment Plant adjacent to it. Lake Evergreen was constructed in the 1960's. In 1995 the Evergreen Dam was raised five feet increasing storage capacity by 36%. Water from Lake Evergreen is pumped to Lake Bloomington for treatment.

Water Distribution
Water flows from the treatment plant at Lake Bloomington through two transmission mains along Pipeline Road to the City's reservoirs and pumping stations. The water storage facilities include a new two million gallon elevated water tank along Hamilton Road on the City's southeast side. Pumping stations on Fort Jesse Road and Division Street move water through the distribution mains to the residents and businesses in the City of Bloomington.

The Department designs and supervises the construction of new and replacement water mains. Maintenance crews repair main breaks and do preventative maintenance. A SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system helps operators run the distribution system more efficiently by letting them see what is happening throughout the system from one location.
