Beginning May 1, 2018...
Solid waste cart fees will increase from $21.00 per month to $25.00 per month for 65 gallon carts and from $25.00 per month to $29.00 per month for 95 gallon carts on May 1, 2018. Beginning on May 1, 2019, all cart sizes and the Low-Income Refuse Fee (currently $16.00 per month) will increase on an annual basis at a rate of 3 percent.
Free bulk waste collection will occur twice per year, once in spring and once in fall. The 2018 Spring Bulk Waste Collection will be on May 1, 2018. The 2018 Fall Bulk Waste Collection will be on October 1, 2018. Free brush collection will continue every other week on weeks when recycling is not collected.

The Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department administers the Solid Waste Program, which provides a wide variety of services, including collecting garbage, recycle, bulk waste, and brush; operating a drop-off facility for residents to dispose of appliances, bulk waste, and grass; clearing brush, weeds, and tree limbs from alleys; cleaning medians and alleys; repairing gravel alleys; and street sweeping.
Solid Waste Program Eligibility
Homes eligible for the Solid Waste Program include single-family homes and multi-family homes with six or fewer units in the City of Bloomington. Owners or occupants of commercial property, including multi-family homes with more than six units, are not eligible to participate in the Solid Waste Program. If you are renting residential property, please contact your landlord or leasing agent to find out if the property participates in the City of Bloomington Solid Waste Program.

- Garbage is picked up every week, except for Christmas Day. Click here for more information on garbage collection.

- Leaves are collected year-round every other week on the same weeks as bulk waste and brush collection. However, the majority of them are collected in late fall. Click here for more information on leaf collection.

The Drop-off Facility is closed on Sundays and municipal holidays.
Assistance for Persons with Disabilities
Public Works will assist persons with disabilities who need to have their garbage or recycle carts taken to the curb prior to collection and returned to their home following collection. Residents can register by filling out the Application for Need Assistance Collection. Note that carts must be left outside. City employees are not allowed to enter garages to retrieve garbage and recycling carts. Need Assistance Collection is for recycling and garbage collection only and does not include bulk waste, brush, or yard waste.
