The Public Works Department is segmented into two main divisions whose responsibilities include:
- The Street and Sewer Division is responsible for the maintenance of the following: pavements, paved alleys, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, pavement marking, traffic signing, sanitary sewers and storm sewers.
- The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the collection and disposal of weekly garbage, bi-weekly recycle, brush and bulk waste and leaves from City of Bloomington residential properties only.
The Solid Waste Division is also responsible for unpaved alley maintenance, street sweeping of public roadways. Weed trimming of public alleyways, right of ways and the operation of the City Drop Off Facility.
The Solid Waste Division also provides programs for the disposal of grass clippings, paint and appliances. Effective May 1, 2012, the City Council approved a $16.00 monthly fee per household for the collection of all types of refuse. Effective December 1st, 2009, each residence is allowed 2 bucket loads per week at no additional charge. Any additional bucket loads are charged $25 per bucket. For further information about the Refuse Billing Program, please call the Public Works Department at 434-2225. Household garbage and recycle are NOT collected on Christmas Day.
The Street and Sewer Division and the Solid Waste Division combine their resources to perform snow and ice control during the winter. During Snow and Ice Control operations weekly garbage and bi-weekly recycle collection will maintain their regular collection schedules.
All other Non- Emergency Services provided by the Department are discontinued until the Snow and Ice Control operation has been completed, at which time those services will resume at the point which they were discontinued.
