Volunteer Information

There are many volunteer opportunities for you or your group at the Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department. From assisting in youth programs, to helping at the zoo, to cleaning up natural areas--there is something for everyone. A list of positions is below. Adopt-a-Park or part of the Constitution Trail
Is your neighborhood group or service organization looking for a worthwhile and rewarding community project? Adopt a Park or part of the trail! Your group can take an active role in the upkeep and maintenance by taking care of flower beds, picking up trash, informing department of graffiti or other problems, etc. Contact Bobby Moews at 434-2280.

Adult Center Volunteers
Get involved with assisting in craft making, bingo, answering the phone, planning and running special events, or other activities offered through the Miller Park Adult Center. The Center is open 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Contact Joyce McKeon at (309) 434-2260 if you are interested.

Aquatics Volunteers
Assist with swim lessons, at a swim meet, or help plan special events for the pools and beach. Times available vary.

 

 

General Clerical
Answer phones, copy flyers or manuals; prepare mailings, stuff envelopes, deliver flyers to schools, etc. Times available between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.

Inclusion Companion
Assist children and/or adults with disabilities to successfully integrate into recreation programs such as gymnastics, crafts, swimming, sports, or other programs.

Marketing/Publicity Develop fliers, design a newsletter, design a volunteer pamphlet, create radio ads, make posters for advertising events, design and decorate bulletin boards at Lincoln Leisure Center, stuff and deliver door-hanger bags, photograph programs for use in publicity materials, or deliver brochures and PR reports.

Miller Park Summer Theatre
Work behind the scenes as a part of the various stage crews to assist with stage managing or work out front as ushers/greeters handing out programs. Take part in the fun of outdoor theatre even if you're not an actor.

Miller Park Zoo
Volunteers are needed in the education department to help with tours and programs; in the animal care department to assist zookeepers; and in the gift shop. Other specialized volunteers are needed to help with landscaping, building projects, mailings and special events. For more information, contact Kris Hall, Education Coordinator, at (309) 434-2824.

Pepsi Ice
Be a coach for the youth hockey program, assist with Learn to Skate programs, help out in guest services, or assist with special events. For more information, contact the Pepsi Ice Center at 434-2737.

Recreation Class Volunteer

Help with preschool or youth classes in activities such as arts and crafts, dance, music, sports, and games. Volunteers need to be able to commit 1 - 2 hours/week during a specific program session.

Special Event Crew
Help with set-up, take-down, refreshments, games and more at one or more of the various special events conducted throughout the year (ie - Fall Festival, Turkey Trot, Christmas at the Park, Easter Event,). The crew receives notification of upcoming events and can choose if they want to be involved. Time commitment and times available vary.

Special Opportunities Available in Recreation (S.O.A.R.)
Assist individuals with disabilities during a weekly program or special event. Contact Shelley Schultz at (309) 434-2260 if you are interested.
