Update: MLK, Jr. Awards Event

Post Date:02/20/2019 1:45 PM

The 43rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 1:30 to 3 pm at the Radisson Hotel at 8 Traders Circle, Normal. This event was originally scheduled for January 12 at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Normal but was rescheduled due to weather. The event, hosted by the City of Bloomington Human Relations Commission in partnership with the Town of Normal Human Relations Commission, is one of the oldest programs in the nation that honors the legacy of Dr. King. This year's event format will be a reception with refreshments rather than a luncheon.

Each year an adult and youth community member is awarded the “I Have a Dream Award” in recognition of their volunteer efforts that support the ideology of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Members of the community are invited to nominate individuals for these awards and can do so online by visiting the following website:
One significant update for the 2019 event is the establishment of a new award, where the Bloomington Human Relations Commission identifies an organization that supports the progress towards Dr. King’s dream of equality. This award is known as the “MLK Champion Award.” The inaugural award will be presented to Not In Our Town (Bloomington-Normal).

This year’s keynote speaker is Garry Moore, recently retired WEEK-TV news anchor and community advocate.

Information about tickets is available online from the event’s website: Tickets are also available from the Human Resources department at City Hall.
