The City of Bloomington provides a wide variety of benefits. Eligibility is dependent upon a variety of factors, including union affiliation and job classification. The following is a list of benefits at a glance that apply to newly hired Classified/non-union employees and most union employees.

Health, Dental, and Vision is provided by the City to eligible employees. The City contributes towards premiums for employee and dependent coverage. Life Insurance is also provided to eligible employees.

Retirement and Pension Plans
The City has different pension plans for which employees may qualify. Full-time employees are covered under the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), Police Pension or Fire Pension. We also offer a tax deferred 457 Plan & Roth IRA that employees may use to supplement their retirement.

The City of Bloomington observes the following holidays:


 New Year’s Day   Veterans Day
 Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday       Thanksgiving
 Good Friday  Day After Thanksgiving
 Memorial Day  Christmas Eve
 Fourth of July  Christmas Day
 Labor Day  New Year’s Eve (1/2 day)


May depend on union contract/employee group:


 80 hours (2 work weeks) Date of hire but less than 5 years 
 120 hours ( 3 work weeks)  at 5 years but less than 11 years
 160 hours ( 4 work weeks)  at 11 years but less than 20 years
 200 hours (5 work weeks)  at 20 or more years

Personal Convenience Days
16 hours per fiscal year (May 1 - April 30)

Wellness Day
8 hours per fiscal year (May 1 - April 30) for those who participate in the Wellness program.

Sick Leave
Employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month until they reach the maximum of 480 hours. 

Employee Assistance Program

The City contracts with a mental health service provider to give all employees and their families short-term, professional consultation and assistance in resolving problems that may be affecting their personal lives/or their job performance.
